Each contestant will be supplied with a piece of hardwood 2" X 2" X 4". The wood will be prepared for mounting on a scroll chuck. Two lathes will be set up to allow two contestants to compete against each other. Prizes will be awarded at the Closing Session to winners in a variety of categories.
Penturners Rendezvous
On Wednesday evening, the 6th Annual Penturners Rendezvous will be held at the Utah Valley State College. This gathering of penturners, new comers, old hands, and penturning wannabees, will feature pen related vendors, a pen display of works from turners from the US and other countries, and demonstrations. The highlight of the evening is the door prize drawings. The event is free but those wishing to participate in the door prize drawings pay a nominal sum to help offset the costs. In past years, everyone who has purchased a door prize ticket has taken home at least that value in prizes. You can find out more details about the event at www.penmakersguild.com.

Penturners Demonstrations
The penturners demonstrations will include a variety of topics from "Journey from Penturning to Penmaking" and "Making Your Pens Unique" to "Making the Father Sing Pen" and many stops in between. Demonstration topics will address a variety of levels from the beginner to the advanced. Demonstrations will be done by Kurt Hertzog, Don Ward, Bill Jackman, and Dick Sing. Whether you are new to penturning or are a master, there will be something of interest in these sessions.
Hands-On Expo
Be sure to visit the Hands-On Expo™ where you can 'test drive' the latest in woodturning tools and equipment. Top-notch professionals will be on hand to demonstrate techniques, offer guidance, and let you try a variety of tools.
Woodturners' Swap Meet
An area on the North Loading Dock will be open for participants to swap wood, tools, turnings, etc., from 7:00 to 9:00 Thursday evening. There is no charge, so bring items of interest to other turners. The swap meet is not intended for commercial suppliers, trucks, trailers, or large amounts of wood.

Presenters' Showcase
Watch presenters show off their turning skill and efficiency by making a quality finished item in only fifteen minutes. These turnings will be available for purchase through the silent auction.

Instant Gallery
Each year the "Instant Gallery" improves in size and quality of work. It will be open to participants and the public beginning Thursday afternoon through Saturday morning. Work will be displayed in a gallery setting and we are looking forward to an impressive display.

Participants are encouraged to bring up to three pieces of their best work to share with others. If the pieces are small (less than 3" diameter) bring more if you like. Demonstrators are asked to bring up to 6 pieces of their work for display. Turnings to be displayed should be left at the "Instant Gallery" when you check in for the conference. The gallery will be set up on Thursday and dismantled Saturday afternoon. The Utah Woodturning Symposium is not responsible for gallery items that become lost or damaged.

Gallery participants are invited to submit to the gallery attendants a one page biographical sketch, resume, or brochure of their work. This will give gallery visitors useful information about the turners and their work.

The "Instant Gallery" and the "Silent Auction" are the only symposium events open to the general public who are not paid participants of the symposium.
Ornamental Turning
Come learn about one of the oldest types of surface decoration in woodturning, ornamental turning. Until recently demonstrations of ornamental turning meant you had to go to someone's shop that had a special ornamental lathe, typically an expensive or unobtainable antique Holtzapffel lathe. New this year, Jon Magill and Bonnie Klein will show you how you can give ornamental turning a try with a lathe you can build and learn to use. A variety of sessions will cover constructing a lathe, learning the basics of using it, and some fun and more advanced projects you can make on your own ornamental lathe.
